
Cranford, NJ – The Owls Nest was rocking Saturday afternoon as the #4 ranked Union Owls hosted the #3 ranked CCBC Essex Knights in a matchup that lived up to the hype. The packed house was treated to a thrilling game that saw the Owls emerge victorious, handing the Knights their only loss on the season with a decisive 89-70 defeat.
From the opening tip, it was clear this game would be a battle. Both teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter, with the Knights holding a slim 19-18 lead at the end of the quarter. The second quarter saw the Owls find their rhythm, with Ayva Tillmon providing a crucial spark off the bench, connecting on two three-pointers. Despite the Knights' efforts to keep pace, the Owls took a narrow 40-38 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was where the Owls truly took control of the game. Their defensive intensity ratcheted up, led by the tenacity of Ore Ogunwolere. Hellary DeLosSantos was a force on the boards, dominating the glass and adding a couple of mid-range jumpers for good measure. Destiny Bynum Johnson exploded for 10 of her game-high 25 points in the third, showcasing her offensive versatility. Isabella Edwards also contributed significantly, pouring in 7 of her 14 points, her energy infectious throughout the team. The Owls outscored the Knights significantly in the third, extending their lead and taking a commanding 73-57 advantage into the fourth.
CCBC Essex made a late push in the final quarter, attempting to close the gap, but the Owls weathered the storm. Union maintained their composure, answering every Knights run with timely baskets and solid defense. Ultimately, the Owls proved too strong, securing the impressive 89-70 victory.
