Scranton, PA - On Saturday, March 1, the UCNJ women’s basketball team battled through a hard-fought contest to secure a thrilling 61-60 victory over Harcum College at Lackawanna College in Scranton, PA. The win came down to the wire, with UCNJ holding off a late surge from Harcum to earn the narrow victory.
Notable Players:
Destiny Bynum Johnson was the standout player for UCNJ, finishing with 19 points on 8-for-19 shooting. Bynum Johnson also contributed 8 rebounds and 3 assists, making her presence felt all over the floor. Her strong performance helped UCNJ stay competitive throughout the game.
Yasmeen Brightwell also had a solid outing, scoring 13 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist. Brightwell’s ability to score efficiently was crucial in keeping the team’s offense flowing. Brightwell is named Most Valuable Player of the game.
Ore Ogunwolere finished with 12 points and contributed to the defensive effort with 3 steals.
Hellary De Los Santos posted a strong performance with 8 points and 12 rebounds. Her effort in the paint was critical, as the team outrebounded Harcum 44-20.
The UCNJ defense was key in the win, as they limited Harcum College to 60 points. UCNJ’s ability to defend and limit Harcum’s scoring opportunities in the second half, particularly in the third quarter, allowed them to hang on to their slim lead. The entire game was a back-and-forth affair, with UCNJ holding a 20-19 lead after the first quarter. Despite a strong second-quarter push from Harcum, Owls regained control with a 16-12 advantage in the third quarter. Heading into the final quarter with a 47-46 lead, UCNJ maintained their narrow advantage but had to fend off a determined Harcum team in the final moments. With the game on the line, UCNJ held strong keeping Harcum from taking the lead in the final seconds and securing the 61-60 win
With the win, women's basketball became NJCAA Region XIX Champions and will move on to the District Championship game. UCNJ will face Monroe Community College in the NJCAA District Championship on Saturday, March 8, at 1:00 PM at SUNY Niagara.
