Dr. Duane, originally from Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica, serves as the Head Esports Coach at Union College of Union County, NJ (UCNJ), bringing five years of dedicated coaching experience to the program. In addition to leading the Esports team, he also holds the position of Assistant Dean of Student Success, combining his passion for mentorship with his commitment to student achievement.

Driven by a deep belief in the power of connection and mentorship, Dr. Duane was inspired to coach at UCNJ to help guide students through their academic and personal journeys. A lifelong gamer himself, he sees Esports as a platform not only for competition but for growth, leadership, and community. His philosophy is rooted in developing the whole player—focusing on mindset, mechanics, and maturity—while maintaining a strong balance between academic and competitive success.

Under Dr. Duane’s leadership, UCNJ Esports achieved a historic milestone by securing multiple national championships including two national titles in 2023-24 in Mario Kart 1v1. In 2024-25, Fortnite (F24), Mario Kart 1v1 (SP25), and both semesters of Call of Duty: Gunfight all were crowned Regional Champions – not to mention the two national championship titles for Call of Duty: Gunfight. These victories reflected not only the team’s talent and strategy but also the resilience, collaboration, and determination of its student-athletes.

Dr. Duane played wide receiver in football and was a soccer midfielder for his high school, which were key experiences that shaped his understanding of teamwork, communication, and leadership—skills he now instills in his Esports athletes. He holds an Associate’s Degree from Essex County College, a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Public Administration from Rutgers University, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.) from Rowan University.

What Dr. Duane enjoys most about coaching is watching students evolve—gaining confidence, discovering their voice, and excelling both in-game and in life. His work is driven by a desire to help students recognize their potential and build skills that will serve them far beyond the digital arena.

Outside of Esports, Dr. Duane enjoys traveling, exploring new cultures, listening to music, appreciating art, and spending time with family and friends. He’s also overcome challenges such as imposter syndrome and personal loss.

Dr. Duane says, “It was especially tough early in my academic and professional journey, but I’ve learned to trust my abilities and lean into my purpose.”

Experiences that have deepened his empathy, resilience, and purpose. A guiding mantra that shapes his coaching and leadership is:
“Once you know your why, the how becomes easier.”
