Union Claim NJCAA Region XIX Championship in Thrilling Rematch

Cranford, NJ - In a highly anticipated rematch of the 2023 Region XIX Final, the Union Owls emerged victorious against the Harcum College Bears, securing the 2024 NJCAA Region XIX Championship in a closely contested battle. The final score, 57-53, not only avenged last year's defeat but also marked a resilient and determined effort from the Owls throughout the game.

The early spark for the Owls came from the dynamic sophomore guard, Ahjanae Young, who ignited the scoreboard by scoring eight straight points in the first quarter. Young's explosive performance set the tone for UCNJ, and despite only leading by three points at the end of the first quarter (15-12), the Owls managed to outscore Harcum 14-10 in the second quarter, establishing a halftime lead of 29-22.

As the game progressed, UCNJ continued to find their stride, particularly in the third quarter. Key contributions from Miyoshi Ellis, who hit a crucial floater, and Ashley Rojas, who nailed a pivotal 3-pointer, allowed the Owls to maintain a nine-point lead at the end of the third quarter (46-35).

However, the Harcum Bears staged a late fourth-quarter comeback, pulling within four points with just 1:38 remaining. The Owls faced a tense moment, but Khila Morris stepped up with two crucial buckets, holding off the Bears and securing the Region XIX Title for Union.

Khila Morris, the standout performer of the championship game, not only led all scorers with 26 points, accompanied by an impressive 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal but also earned the prestigious Region XIX Rose Battaglia Player of the Year award. Morris's exceptional contributions on the court throughout the season solidified her as a dominant force in the Region.

Ahjanae Young, who set the early tone for the game, contributed 13 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal. Miyoshi Ellis played a vital role with 9 points, 8 rebounds, 9 assists, and 4 steals, displaying her versatility on both ends of the court. Lastly, Ashley Rojas made significant contributions off the bench, adding 7 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist.

The victory marks a significant achievement for the Owls, providing redemption for last year's defeat as the Region XIX Title returns to UCNJ. Coach Montas's strategic guidance and leadership in guiding the Owls to victory, were recognized with the Region XIX Donna Herran Coach of the Year award.
