Congratulations Coach Marbely on 100 Wins

Union County College is proud and excited to celebrate with Women's Basketball Coach Marbely Montas as she records her 100th victory.

At the end of her team’s win against Essex County College last night, Coach Montas made her way to her team for their routine post game huddle.  She didn’t even know that she had just become the quickest coach in program history to collect 100 wins.  In her fifth season at the helm of the Owls, Montas now holds a 100-26 record (.794 winning pct.).  The Owls are also now 41-5 at home during Montas’ tenure (.891), including 4-0 this season.

How It Happened

Union rolled past Essex with an 87-41 victory.  As a team, Union shot the ball well from the floor, boasting a 43 shooting percentage to move to 7-0 on the year.  Five Owls finished the night in double figures, led by Aliyah Williams 17-points.  Brianna Mills followed with 16-points, 10-rebounds, and 7-assist.  The hot play was contagious with Toni Blandford having 13-points, 15-rebound, Nia Mallette with 11-points, 7-rebounds and capping off the night was Saja Alston with 10-points.

Early in the first quarter, Essex tried to match Union basket for basket, but with four minutes remaining, Williams had an easy layup off a Tiyanni McClary steal, followed by Nia Mallete draining a shot from the perimeter to put the Owls up 13-6.   Once the Owls took the lead, they never looked back.

Union took a 37-20 lead heading into halftime and carried the momentum into the second half.

Blanford came out and scored the first two points of the half, followed by Williams banking in back-to-back shots to create some distance for the Owls.  Union continued to stretch the lead in the second half, solidifying the victory and Coach Montas’ 100th career win in the process.

Since this victory, The Owls have won two more and are now preparing for CCBC Essex in a Battle of the Undefeated teams on December 14. Good Luck Owls.
