Saturday, October 14, the Lady Owls took the field with several thoughts on their mind. First, to win the game of course. Second, to thank their sophomores for their efforts to the team throughout the season. And finally, third, to raise awareness for breast cancer.
The Lady Owls won their game with a 1-0 advantage over Middlesex Count College thanks to Maya Lawler's goal assisted by Gabriella Angrisano. However, there was a bit of change in this game compared to others. The team did not have Coach Angie Correia at the helm, but rather, a guest coach recovering from breast cancer who led the Lady Owls to victory.
"Amanda the Fighter", a 2009 alumna of Union County College, was diagnose with breast cancer June 7, 2017. She is happily married and a mother of two kids and is currently undergoing ACT chemotherapy, with only a couple more treatments that might make this nightmare a figment of her imagination.
This strong woman, led the Lady Owls to a 1-0 victory over Middlesex, which helped the team cap a strong season, finishing in the top two of Region XIX and the Garden State Athletic Conference behind Rowan College Gloucester Campus.
The team couldn't have done it without their graduating sophomores this year that helped lead the team:
#2 Rosa Bonilla, made All-Region and All-Conference Academic Teams as a freshman
#3 Emily Morris, co-captain, named to All-Region and All-NJCAA Academic Teams
#5 Wendy Reyes, versatile player and poses as a leader on the pitch for her squad
#8 Nicole Almagro, the driving force of the squad, named to the All-Region and All-NJCAA Academic Teams
#10 Michelle Guerra, co-captain, solid midfielder that was a key to the team's success, and an active National Guard member
The team has qualified as the #2 seed in the Region XIX Tournament and will be hosting Bucks County Community College on October 21st at Kean University.
