It was the region leaders who went home with the win in this late season matchup. Union County College put in a strong effort on the pitch, but ultimately came up short against a strong Camden County team, 2-0. Union County held Camden County scoreless through the half, and both teams looked evenly matched, but in the second, Camden County showed their dominance with three times as many shots towards goal as Union County in the second half.
The Union County defense was the first to make a mistake, allowing a 75th minute goal to give Camden County the one goal lead. Back on their heels, Union County attempted to push back for an equalizer, but the second goal awarded to Camden County in the 86th minute had secured the game.
Raonne Dos Santos from Union County College was held goalless for the first time in the past five games. The Camden County defense did well marking the Owls' leading scorer. Union's goalkeeper, Diego Pellejero, had a solid overall performance regardless of not recording a clean sheet. Under pressure throughout the entire match by Camden's 11 shots towards goal, Pellejero recorded 7 saves, while also allowing 2 to fall in the back of the net.
This loss leaves Union County scrambling for wins with only four games left in the regular season. Union, now (8-6-2) overall, and (4-2-1) in the Garden State Athletic Conference, have dropped two spots in Region XIX, now with a (7-2-1) record.
Union County's next game is another tough matchup, where they play away at Ocean County (9-4, 6-2), Tuesday, October 10, at 4:00 pm. Ocean County is third in both the region, and the conference.
