Chewy Massena Named Region XIX Player of the Year

2016-17 Men's Basketball season was an extra special season for returning sophomore #13 Chinua Massena, but known by teammates, coaches and administration as Chewy. On the court Chewy has been an exceptional leader for the Owls.  As a shooting guard, Chewy naturally takes control of the court and leads his teammates which he has proven by leading the nation with an average of 28 points per game.  He also leads the nation with 3 pointers and is ranked 2nd with a 3 point percentage of 55.7.

From hard work and determination Chewy is able to now add to his basketball resume that he has earned over 1,000 points during his 2 year career at Union County College.  An achievement that student-athletes at four year institutions attempt to achieve, Chewy has done so in two years.  On February 2nd, 2017 Chewy scored 18 points which he then surpassed 1,000 points.

The men's basketball team has had back to back successful seasons by qualifying for the Region XIX tournament.  Chewy personally has also had success by being named to the All-Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) 1st, All-Region XIX 1st Team and being named the Region XIX Player of the Year.

Chewy is now concentrating on his academics along with staying in shape to play at the next level.  He is being recruited by NCAA Division I & II institutions.
