Epic 12-Run Inning Lifts Owls to Upset Victory Over #8 Brookdale

LINCROFT, NJ - Union Baseball was propelled by a big fifth inning to take down the eighth-ranked Brookdale Jersey Blues by a score of 15-4 in seven innings.

The Owls were off to a quick start on a rainy day at Brookdale, scoring a run in both the first and second innings. The Blues responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the second, but the Owls stifled their bats for the rest of the game. Spearheaded by timely hitting and patient at-bats, Union pushed across 12 runs in the top of the fifth to cement their big upset win.

The Owls were clicking offensively against the Jersey Blues pitching staff. Every Owl that was in the starting lineup reached base safely at least once, and four Owl hitters had a 3-hit game. Quincy Bryant and Austin Brooks set the tone at the top of the lineup, combining for five runs. Javier Alfonso had an efficient day at the plate as well going 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs in the victory.

Jovon Portuondo pitched a masterful game out of the bullpen. The sophomore right-hander surrendered just 3 hits in 5.1 innings of scoreless ball for his second win of the season.

Union will be back in action on Saturday, April 27 at the New Hampshire Institure of Technology with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
