Union County College would like to
congratulate Dean of College Life, Tammy Smith on becoming the
National Junior College Athletics Association Region XIX new
Assistant Women’s Director. Dean Smith has been voted in by
her peers to take on this new responsibility. In this position she
will assist the directors that oversee each region.
Dean Smith has been at Union County College for three years. She
began as the interim athletic director. In August 2010 she was
promoted to Dean of College Life, the position in which she
currently serves. During her tenure at the college she has created
four new teams, a women’s softball team, women’s soccer
team, men’s and women’s track and field, and a
men’s lacrosse team. She also oversees the Student Government
Association/Clubs and under her leadership eight new clubs have
been added this past year. She is part of many different committees
such as the Sports Management Advisory Committee, Affirmative
Action Officer for New Hires, Union’s Golf Tournament
Committee, Student Intercollegiate Athletics/Intramurals Committee,
is Head of the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame Committee, and
the NJCAA XIX Basketball and Volleyball Committee. She had a major
part in founding our new school athletic logo as well as hosted one
of the College’s most prestigious events, a Title IX
celebration, which was the 40th Anniversary of gender equality in
education and athletics.
The teams that Dean Smith has established have already made some
big accomplishments. The track and field team in its inaugural
season had students qualify for nationals. The lacrosse team in its
first game won 7-0 and also runs a clinic for children. The
women’s soccer team had its first annual Halloween 5K Run in
which the proceeds went to support improvements to the
College’s Fitness Center and the Athletics Program.
Dean Smith is a graduate from East Stroudsburg University in East
Stroudsburg, PA, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in
Health and Physical Science and a master’s degree in Sport
Management. She began her coaching career as an assistant coach at
her alma mater. Prior to coming to Union County College, Dean Smith
was a coach at North Warren High School in Blairstown, NJ, and
Lafayette College in Easton, PA. In 11 seasons at North Warren she
had a win/lose record of 193-58. During her time as a coach she has
received four Coach of the Year honors from local media. She
has been coaching for 27 years. All of these experiences have been
able to prepare her for her new position as NJCAA Region XIX
Assistant Women’s Director.
