NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Award Winners

Union County College is proud to announce two student-athletes as NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Award winners along with the Women’s Volleyball team who was named one of the NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year.   These awards are given to student-athletes throughout the country who have proven to succeed not only throughout athletics but have demonstrated great successes with their academics.

Men’s Soccer player, Carl Lohier of Rahway, NJ, received the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award for his outstanding academic accomplishments.  Carl was a main component for the men’s soccer team for the past two years and will be missed throughout the athletic department.  Carl recently graduated with honors from Union County College this past May and has transferred to Kean University to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management.

Baseball player, James O’Rourke of Westfield, NJ, received the Superior Academic Achievement Award for his exceptional academic achievements.  James shined in the classroom and earned an outstanding GPA for both semesters this past academic year.  He joined the Owls Baseball team this past spring as a transfer student from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania.  James was a tremendous addition to the team by stealing 9 bases and had a hitting average of 0.279.

The Union County College Women’s Volleyball team was also honored by NJCAA as one of the 2014 NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year.  The Volleyball team earned a team GPA of 3.08.  The team not only hit the books, but work extremely hard on the court which earned them being named Champions of the Garden State Athletic Conference.

This past fall the Athletic Department worked together with the Academic Learning Center to set-up an academic program for the student-athletes called Training Camp.  The program was designed to increase the academic performances for all student-athletes at the College.

Union County College and the Athletic Department are very proud of Carl Lohier, James O’Rourke and the entire Volleyball team for their commitment to academics and their achievement throughout both athletics and academics.
